General Principals

  • Encrypt all the data that is transmitted over the network. Encrypting password authentication. Minimizing the amount of software that is installed.
  • Use security-enhancing software and tools like SELinux and IPTables.
  • Maintain user accounts and enforce a good password policy. Delete user accounts that are not being used.
  • Review system and application logs regularly to detect if local logs have been modified. These logs are written to /var/log/secure.
  • Always log in as a user with limited access and use admin root access only when needed. The administrator should use the terminal command sudo to execute commands as root when necessary.
